How Live Engraving Works at Brand Events (And Why Luxury Brands Love It)
In luxury retail and brand activations, personalisation has become one of the most meaningful ways to connect with guests.
Rather than simply purchasing a product, guests are invited to create something uniquely theirs.
One of the most engaging ways brands do this is through live engraving experiences, where products are personalised on-site while guests watch the process unfold.
Over the years, I’ve worked as a live event engraver for many brand activations, collaborating with brands such as Montblanc, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Lancôme, Viktor & Rolf and Micheli Jewellery.
Each event is different, but one thing remains the same — guests are always fascinated by the moment their item is transformed into something personal.
What Is Live Engraving at an Event?
Live engraving is the process of personalising products directly at an event using portable engraving tools.
Guests can request:
-
their name or initials
-
a short message
-
a meaningful date
-
or a small illustration
Before engraving, I usually sketch the layout directly onto the item to ensure the composition looks balanced and elegant.
Once the design is approved by the guests, the engraving begins, carefully carving the design into the surface.
Because everything is done free-hand, each piece is completely unique.
Why Brands Love Engraving Activations
Live engraving adds several powerful elements to an event experience.
Personalisation
Guests receive something made specifically for them.
A fragrance bottle or lipstick suddenly becomes a personal object rather than just a product.
Craftsmanship
Watching the engraving happen in real time highlights the artistry behind the process.
In a world filled with automation and AI-generated experiences, people are naturally drawn to something created slowly and by hand.
Memorability
A personalised item often becomes something guests keep long after the event.
Every time they use it, they remember the experience where it was created.
Examples of Live Engraving Activations
Beauty and Fragrance Events
At a pop-up activation for Viktor & Rolf, I provided free-hand engraving on perfume bottles for guests.
Each bottle was personalised with initials or small decorative details, turning it into a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
The engraving station quickly became a focal point of the event as guests gathered to watch the process.
Jewellery Personalisation
For the reopening of the boutiques of Micheli Jewellery, I engraved personalised messages onto handcrafted 9ct gold plate bracelets.
Jewellery engraving often feels particularly special because the item is already meaningful. The engraving simply adds another layer of personal story, some customer engraved their pet's name, some engraved their two daughters' name
Luxury Retail Activations
For brands like Montblanc and Giorgio Armani, engraving was offered during retail activations and seasonal events.
Guests could personalise their purchases while enjoying the event atmosphere.
These moments often become one of the highlights of the shopping experience.
What Can Be Engraved at an Event?
Many different surfaces can be engraved depending on the event concept.
Common items include:
-
fragrance bottles
-
lipstick cases and cosmetics
-
jewellery and metal bracelets
-
compact mirrors
-
wine glasses and glassware
-
candles
-
silver trays or cutlery
-
stainless steel drinkware
Each surface creates a slightly different engraving effect, which adds to the charm of the process.
Engraving at Weddings and Private Celebrations
Live engraving is not only used for brand activations.
At weddings and private celebrations, engraving can create beautiful personalised gifts for guests.
At one wedding, my team and I engraved 150 wine glasses with guests’ initials, creating a personalised keepsake for everyone attending.
These small details often become the most memorable part of the celebration.
When Events Need a Larger Team
For larger-scale events with hundreds of guests, I often lead a small team of experienced engravers.
This allows us to serve more guests while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
It’s particularly helpful for:
-
large brand activations
-
retail pop-ups at different locations
-
trade show or multi-day events
A Human Moment in a Digital World
Today, many experiences are instant, digital, and automated.
But watching a name slowly appear on a glass or metal surface — engraved by hand — creates a completely different feeling.
Guests pause.
They watch.
They connect with the moment.
That small moment of attention is often what makes live art such a powerful part of an event.
