Bee in the Moment
During my residency in Fukuoka, I was stung by a bee for the first time in my life. The experience stayed with me. Bees are hardworking, useful, and beautiful creatures, but after a bee stings, its life ends shortly after. It reminded me that our time is limited and encouraged me to appreciate the present more deeply.
As a visitor in Japan, I found myself noticing things I might normally overlook in my hometown. The cake at a local café, flowers growing beside a road, handmade ceramics, quiet rice fields, and the changing light throughout the day. When we live somewhere for a long time, it is easy to stop noticing these details. Travelling allowed me to see them again with fresh eyes.
Many of the works in this exhibition began as quick photos and sketches made on location. During this residency, I spent much more time drawing than I normally do at home in Melbourne. Drawing became a way for me to spend time with a place, understand it better, and build a connection with it. Through the process of sketching, I could observe details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
My paintings have always been inspired by the beauty of everyday life. This body of work continues that exploration through the objects, places, and moments I encountered during my time in Fukuoka.
The title Bee in the Moment is a reminder to be fully present. Together, these works form a visual diary of my experience living in Itoshima, Fukuoka, Japan and an invitation to look more closely at the everyday moments that surround us

福岡でのレジデンス中、私は人生で初めて蜂に刺されました。その経験は、私の中に強く残りました。蜂は勤勉で、役に立ち、美しい生き物ですが、一度刺すと、その命はまもなく終わってしまいます。そのことは、私たちの時間が限られていることを思い出させ、今この瞬間をより深く味わうよう促してくれました。
日本を訪れる者として、私は自分の故郷では普段見過ごしてしまうようなものに気づくようになりました。地元のカフェのケーキ、道端に咲く花、手作りの陶器、静かな田んぼ、そして一日の中で移り変わる光。ひとつの場所に長く住んでいると、こうした細部に気づかなくなってしまうことがあります。旅をすることで、私はそれらを新鮮な目で再び見ることができました。
この展覧会の多くの作品は、その場所で撮影した簡単な写真やスケッチから始まりました。今回のレジデンス中、私は普段メルボルンの自宅で過ごす時よりも、ずっと多くの時間をドローイングに費やしました。ドローイングは、ある場所と時間を共にし、その場所をよりよく理解し、つながりを築くための方法となりました。スケッチをする過程を通して、普段なら見過ごしてしまうような細部を観察することができました。
私の絵画はこれまでも、日常生活の美しさからインスピレーションを受けてきました。本作群は、福岡で過ごした時間の中で出会ったもの、場所、そして瞬間を通して、その探求をさらに続けるものです。
《Bee in the Moment》というタイトルは、今この瞬間にしっかりと存在することを思い出させるものです。これらの作品は、福岡県糸島市で暮らした私の経験を記録した視覚的な日記であり、私たちのまわりにある日常の瞬間を、より注意深く見つめるための招待でもあります。
