Live Free-hand Engraving vs Laser Engraving - What’s the Difference and Which One Is Right for Your Event?

So you’ve decided you want engraving at your event.

Great choice, by the way. Personalised keepsakes are one of the most powerful things you can give a guest ... something with their name on it that they’ll actually keep, not leave on the table next to the empty champagne flutes and forget about it.

But now you’re faced with a choice: live free-hand engraving or laser engraving?

They sound similar. They are not.

Let me break it down ...because the difference matters more than most people realise when they’re planning an event.

-----

What is laser engraving?

Laser engraving uses a machine to etch a design or text onto a surface.

It’s fast, consistent, and scalable. You can pre-programme exactly what you want and the machine produces it the same way, every single time.

It’s also usually done before the event. Guests receive a pre-engraved item - same design, same font, same placement - as part of their gift bag or table setting.

-----

What is live engraving?

Live engraving is exactly what it sounds like.

A human artist - me, with a handheld portable engraving tool — creates each piece in real time, at your event, in front of your guests.

Every name is written freehand. Every piece is slightly different. Every guest watches their item being personalised right in front of them, stroke by stroke.

It’s less like receiving a product and more like watching a performance.

And *that* is the difference that changes everything.

-----

The experience is completely different.

Here’s the thing about laser engraving: it’s a lovely touch, but it’s done by a machine.

Guests pick up their item, notice their name, think that’s nice, thank you... and move on.

Live engraving? Guests gather. They queue. They film it on their phones. They come back to watch someone else get theirs done. The engraving station becomes one of the most talked-about moments of the entire evening.

I once have a guest asked me to engrave a few pasta illustration on her bracelet, and the result was so cute and memorable.

I’ve done live engraving at Montblanc, YSL, pop-up counters at shopping centre and varies events across Melbourne. Every single time, the crowd around my table doesn’t stop.

There’s something about watching something permanent being created - something that cannot be undone - that draws people in like nothing else.

-----

The personalisation goes deeper.

With laser engraving, personalisation means a name or initials in a pre-set computer font.

With live engraving, it can mean so much more.

A date. An inside joke. A nickname. A short message. A symbol that means something specific to that person.

Because I’m creating each piece individually, guests can request something truly unique and I can make it happen on the spot. That level of bespoke personalisation is simply not possible with a pre-programmed machine.

-----

The handmade quality is visible.

This one matters especially for luxury events.

Laser engraving is clean and precise - which is great for consistency. But it also looks… machine-made. Because it is.

Freehand engraving has a warmth and character that you can see and feel. Slight variations in pressure and stroke. A quality that says a human being made this, just for you.

For luxury brands — and for weddings where every detail matters - that distinction is everything.

-----

What about speed?

This is the practical question every event planner asks ... and it’s a fair one.

Laser engraving: unlimited pieces, done before or at the event. Yes it's super quick as it is done by a machine

Live engraving: I work at around 20+ items per hour. So for a 3-hour activation, that’s approximately 60 beautifully engraved pieces. For larger events, I can bring additional experienced artists to increase capacity.

For most brand activations, corporate events and weddings, 20 items per hour is more than enough. And the experience guests have watching their piece being created is worth every minute of the wait.

-----

So which one is right for your event?

Choose laser engraving if:

- You have a very large guest list (200+) and need every single person to receive something identical or you want your logo to be printed on the item
- Your budget is tight and laser printing is more cost effective
- The personalisation is simple - same name format, same font, for everyone

Choose live engraving if:

You want an experience, not just a keepsake
- Your event is luxury, high-end and guests-focused
- You want guests to feel genuinely surprised and delighted
- You want social media moments - people share live engraving content obsessively
- You want each piece to feel truly individual and handcrafted (I can draw a little heart of a simple illustration if the guests request it

Honestly? If you’re reading this blog, you probably already know which one you want.

You want the one that makes people stop. The one they film. The one they tell their friends about on the way home.

That’s live free-hand engraving. And that’s what I do. 😊

What can be engraved?

Great question. I work on a wide range of surfaces including:

  • Glass — champagne flutes, whisky glasses, perfume bottles
  • Metal — jewellery, mirror compacts, bottle openers, keyrings

If you’re not sure whether your product is suitable, just ask - I’m always happy to advise before you book.
