She hadn't felt beautiful in years...then she saw her sketch by a Melbourne Live wedding illustrator

I was working a wedding reception in Melbourne, sketching guests one by one. The music was loud. The dance floor was full. Everyone was having their best time.
Then I handed a sketch to one of the guests.
She screamed. Actually screamed, right there in the middle of the reception. Then the tears came.
She looked at me and said: "I have two kids. I haven't felt beautiful like this in a while."
I think about her all the time.
Because that moment is exactly why I do what I do as a live wedding illustrator in Melbourne. It's not just about a pretty drawing. It's about handing someone a version of themselves that says: you are worth being seen and you look absolutely beautiful through an artist’s eye.

The Part of My Job Nobody Talks About
My absolute favourite part of being a live wedding illustrator isn't the drawing. It's everything happening around me while I draw.
The ceremony vows. The best man speech that makes half the room laugh in tears. The maid of honour who tells the story of how the couple met, and suddenly I understand exactly who these two people are to each other.
I'm sketching the whole time, pen moving, eyes down... but I'm taking it all in. And somewhere between the words and the room and the energy of the night, that feeling makes its way into every drawing I do.
I can't always explain it. But the sketches from weddings feel different. Softer. More alive. I think it's because the love in the room is impossible to ignore, and it just... comes through in the lines.
If I work on the “after event sketches” I also love to get them done within 2 weeks, sometimes quicker, so I am still feeling the energy of your wedding and came through each of my line and brush strokes.

What Is a Live Wedding Illustrator, Exactly?
If you haven't seen live wedding illustration before, here's how it works at a Melbourne wedding.
I arrive early, set up a beautiful display table, and during cocktail hour or the reception I move through the room and sketch your guests one by one. Each portrait takes around 5 to 7 minutes. I work from a quick photo I take of each guest, so they don't have to sit still and miss the party.
The finished sketch goes into a clear sleeve or envelope to protect from food and drinks. Your guest takes it home as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
I can sketch around 8 to 10 guests per hour, so for a 6 hour booking at a 60 person wedding, most guests get their own portrait. If you have more guests, I always have the "after event service" available to more people get a sketch.
The style is fashion-forward and elegant. I make people look tall, flattering, and like the best version of themselves. Every detail goes in... the bags, the shoes, the way someone is holding their champagne glass.

Why Couples in Melbourne Are Booking Live Wedding Illustration
Here's what I hear from couples after their wedding, over and over again.
"We still get messages from guests saying it was their favourite part of the night."
Not the flowers. Not the food. The sketch.
Because here's the thing about weddings. Guests get dressed up, they look the best, they travel, they take time out of their lives to celebrate two people they love. And most of the time, the favour they go home with is a piece of chocolate in a box.
A live illustration is different. It's personal. It's made for that specific person, at that specific moment in time, on a day that already means something to them.
Years from now, your guests won't remember exactly what they ate at your reception or what flower you picked. But they will remember how you made them feel at your wedding, and part of the experience was, standing at an artist's table, watching a drawing of themselves come to life. They know you love them without you saying it. It is the best surprise came through my art.
Bianca and Rob said it perfectly after their 2024 Melbourne wedding:
"Candy added the best element of surprise and fun to our reception. One week on we are still receiving messages from our guests talking about how special it was." — Bianca + Rob, 2024
What is my style and offering if you consider me as your Live Wedding Illustrator in Melbourne?
Not all live illustrators work the same way, so here's what to look for when you're comparing options.
Style: Does the illustration style match the tone of your wedding? My work is fashion-forward and elegant, not caricature, not cartoon. Each guest appears taller, slimmer, and flattering, with recognisable facial features. If you have a luxurious, styled wedding, you want an illustration that reflects that.
Experience with luxury events: I've been working as a live event artist since 2018, with over 30 luxury brands including Prada, Dior, Chaumet, Montblanc, and Balenciaga. I bring that same level of craft and professionalism to every wedding I work. I know live wedding illustration or having a live artist is an investment and I want to make sure the quality and standard are the absolute best I can offer.
Speed: At 9 to 10 guests per hour, the pace matters. Too slow and guests miss out. Too rushed and the quality drops. I've spent years finding the balance.
The setup: A good live illustrator brings a beautiful display that enhances your styling and doesn’t look crafty. I bring all my own supplies, signage, and packaging. All I need from you is a table and a chair, and feel free to put flowers or styling on my table to match the rest of your wedding styling.
The personalisation: Your wedding date and names printed on every sketch. Custom paper design available. A complimentary couple portrait included in every booking.

Choose Your Style
When you book me as your live wedding illustrator, you can choose between two sketch styles, or mix both across the evening.
Full Body: Fashion-forward sketches. I focus on the complete outfit, the accessories, the posture. Every detail your guests spent time putting together. Chic, editorial, elegant.
Half Body: Elegant focus on facial features and personal charm. Warmer and more intimate.
Most couples go with full body but I can sketch half body or a mix of both. I can also do half body portraits for guests who would like to sit down with me during the reception.

When to Book a Live Wedding Illustrator in Melbourne
This is the question I get asked most. And my honest answer: as early as possible.
Peak season weekends in Melbourne book 8 to 15 months in advance. I can only take on 4 to 5 weddings per month so I can give each couple my full attention. Once a date is gone, it's gone.
I'm currently open for 2027 weddings. If you're planning a 2026 wedding, email me to check availability for the remaining months. Few spots are still available until I'm fully booked for 2026.
Wedding packages start from $1,620 AUD (incl. GST).
A Note on Why I Love Wedding Work
Brand events are exciting. Luxury activations are glamorous. But weddings are different.
At a wedding, every single person in the room chose to be there. They got dressed up because they love someone. They are having the best time.
And when I hand someone a sketch of themselves at the end of the night... sometimes they cry. Sometimes they scream. Sometimes they just go very quiet and smile.
That woman who said she hadn't felt beautiful in years? I will never forget her reactions.
That's the whole job. That's everything.
