Inside the purple container - What is it actually like creating in Artsbox Footscray?

“WHAT WILL IT LOOKS LIKE IF I HAVE AN ART STUDIO?”

It's a thought that constantly crosses my mind, the excitement of having a creative space outside of home, a place that solely for making art. It's something I've always wanted to try but haven't had the chance yet.

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to test out this idea at Artsbox Footscray, my first residency experience.

THE BEGINNING

I was extremely excited to move in. I felt like moving to a new house! I bought all my favourite art tools, paintings to the space and settled in very quickly.

During the first 1-2 weeks, I was still busy completing a commissioned artwork for a collector in Hong Kong, who plans to display it in his medical clinic in Tsuen Wan. It's a vibrant and colorful piece that I thoroughly enjoyed working on.

I also began exploring another idea close to my heart – combining my love for Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, and oil painting. Here's how it turned out! What do you think?

I'm personally not entirely sure yet, but I plan to experiment further. I've already made a few edits since the photo was taken.

THE NEXT 3-6 WEEKS

One thing I love the most in the space was the natural sunlight. After few weeks working in the studio, an idea came to me to invite my Footscray community to borrow their vase and donate some flowers to me.

After I posted it on fb community group, the response was overwhelming! Many generously shared their beloved items, and I took the time to photograph them in the Artsbox.

I have then spent  my time to sketching on eight canvases and began painting a few of them. They're still a work in progress, but once I finish them all, I'll update this blog to share with the world!

SUMMARY

Overall it was a very fun and productive time while I was working in Footscray Artsbox as the Artist in Residence.
Another highlight was I was able to reconnecting with a few artists and friends during the time. We shared discussions about art, opportunities, and the challenges we face as a creative. A lot of my friends were very keen to visit the Artsbox space. The library staff and Maribyrnong Council were also incredibly friendly and supportive, and I learned a lot from our conversations.

I discovered that I loved to be in a space where I can interact with others. While I can work in my home studio with my favourite podcast, I find it much more enjoyable to be surrounded by creatives, engaging in conversation and drawing inspiration from one another. It might not always be the most productive environment, but it's certainly more fun!
