What to Expect from a Live Event Illustrator at Your Melbourne Brand Activation
What to Expect from a Live Event Illustrator at Your Melbourne Brand Activation
If you're planning a brand activation in Melbourne and you've started googling "live event illustrator Melbourne"... you already experienced or heard how fun it could be to add a fashion illustrator to your event!
Live illustration is one of those experiences that sounds simple on paper but with a huge impact. An artist shows up, draws your guests, everyone leaves happy. But when it's done well, it's so much more than that. It becomes the moment people talk about for weeks, or even remember years later. I remember every events when I got a sketch of myself. It is the image that ends up on Instagram, forever in their mind or framed on their wall. Most importantly, the reason your guests remember your brand.
I've illustrated at activations for Prada, Dior, Chaumet, Montblanc, Jo Malone London, Balenciaga, and more. So I know exactly what makes a live illustration experience land, and what makes it fall flat.

Here's everything you need to know before you book.
What does a live event illustrator actually do?
A live event illustrator creates real-time artwork at your event, right in front of your guests. No templates. Absolutely no AI. Every piece is made on the spot, by hand, while your guests watch the process and enjoy the event.
At a brand activation, this usually looks like one of two things:
Guest portraits. Guests approach the illustration station or I approach them and introduce myself, I take a quick reference photo, and create a personalised portrait of them on the spot. Each illustration takes around 5 to 7 minutes, so I can comfortably illustrate around 8 to 10 guests per hour. They leave with a keepsake that has your branding on it. Something they appreciate and will actually keep.
Dior | Luxury Fashion Illustration on Gift Boxes
Balenciaga | Line Art Fashion Illustration for VIP Event
Product customisation. I paint or engrave directly onto your product, gift boxes, packaging, or brand collateral. I've done this for Prada gift boxes, Jo Malone perfume bottles, paper fans, and leather luggage tags. It turns your product into a one-of-a-kind piece, right in front of the client's eyes.
Prada | Holiday Gifting Experience
Hand-drawn illustrations on luxury gift boxes for VIP clients. Delicate, festive, and tailored to each guest.
Both create serious stopping power at the event.
Why do luxury brands keep choosing live illustration for activations?
Because it's memorable. And because it's genuinely surprise your guests in a way most other activations aren't.
A live event illustrator does something that a photo booth, a DJ, or a branded cocktail can't. It slows people down. It creates a moment of genuine connection between your guest and your brand. They watch something beautiful being made, just for them, and they feel seen.
That emotional response is what luxury brands are paying for.
I've watched guests at Montblanc activations stand and watch the illustration process for ten minutes, completely absorbed. That's ten minutes of brand immersion you simply can't manufacture any other way.
Montblanc | 2026 Valentine's Day, 2025 Christmas Event & 2024 Collins Street Boutique Reopening
Live portraits using their signature Montblanc fountain pens.
And the keepsake they take home? It lives on their desk, in a frame on their wall, on their Instagram. Your brand travels with it.
What should you look for when booking a live event illustrator in Melbourne?
Not all live illustrators are the same. Here's what actually matters when you're evaluating who to book:
Speed. At a brand activation, you have a queue of guests and a small window of time. Your illustrator needs to work fast without sacrificing quality and details. Ask specifically how many illustrations they complete per hour. I work at around 8 to 10 guests per hour for full body fashion illustration with facial features.
Style. Not all live illustrators draw the same way. In the market you'll find caricature styles, loose gestural sketches, realistic portraits, faceless illustration and fashion illustration. My style is fashion illustration with facial features. Every guest comes out taller, slimmer, very flattering... with enough facial detail that they can genuinely see themselves in it. Simple but recognisable, elegant but warm, and the kind of keepsake your guest actually wants to photograph and share.
Professionalism. This person is representing your brand at the event. They need to be polished, punctual, experienced and comfortable in a luxury environment or a high-pace event space. Ask for their client list. Ask how they handle last-minute changes or extended sessions.
Flexibility. Every activation brief is different. Can they illustrate on your branded stationery? Can they incorporate your product into the artwork? Can they slightly adjust their style or colour palette to match your brand aesthetic? Have they done something similar for other brands? These are the questions worth asking upfront.
Portfolio. Look for variety and consistency. Anyone can have one great artwork made in the studio. What does their work look like across different guests, at 20 different on-site events?
What do you need to provide on the day?
Not much, honestly. Here's the standard setup:
A table and a chair. And a brief beforehand so I know your brand, your aesthetic, and what you're going for.

I bring everything else. Branded paper, pens, Copic markers, premium artist quality watercolour, branding elements, packaging for the finished illustrations, portable lamp. Everything is handled and I would only use premium quality products, because everything I use represents your brands.
For outdoor activations, a shade or large umbrella is needed. I've worked at multiple outdoor events under Melbourne summer heat and rain... preparation is everything.
Can a live event illustrator do more than just portraits?
Potentially yes, and this is where it gets interesting.
Beyond guest portraits, some live event illustrators can offer:
Live product customisation, painting directly onto your products or packaging.
Live canvas painting, creating one large statement artwork during the event, displayed in real time, or smaller canvases guests can take home easily.
Chaumet | Exclusive Christmas Event
Live-painted bespoke canvases at a private event. A one-of-a-kind artwork created in real time for the VIPs.
Workshop facilitation, guiding your VIP guests through creating their own artwork, like the watercolour workshop I ran for Tory Burch.
Tory Burch | Designer Bag Launch
Live watercolour handbag sketching workshop and soft clay magnet session. Stylish, interactive, and genuinely fun.
Mixed media live art, combining illustration with calligraphy, engraving, or other live art services.
Porsche | Live Chinese Calligraphy, Lunar New Year
Live Chinese calligraphy at Porsche Melbourne Centre and Porsche NOW Chadstone.
Fendi | New Perfume Collection Launch
Luxury live calligraphy to celebrate Fendi's exclusive new fragrance collection.
I'm one of the only Melbourne artists offering live illustration alongside live engraving and calligraphy, both Western and Chinese. Which means if your brief requires more than one service, you don't need to coordinate multiple artists. I can handle it all seamlessly.
How far in advance should you book?
For Melbourne brand activations, I'd recommend booking your live event illustrator at least 6 to 8 weeks out, ideally more for peak periods like Christmas, Valentine's Day, Lunar New Year, Mother's Day, and Melbourne Fashion Week.
Great live fashion illustrators in Melbourne book out quickly, especially during peak season. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility we both have to reserve the dates.
